Taike awards artist grants funding the work of 290 artists

The arts councils of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) have awarded artist grants to 290 professionals, two-thirds of whom work in the fields of the visual arts, literature, theatre and music.

The grant work funded by Taike starts from the beginning of 2020. The duration of the artist grants varies from half a year to five years. The amount of each artist grant will be 2,000 euros per month as of next year, if the Ministry of Finance’s proposal for the 2020 budget is passed. Currently, the tax-free amount of each artist grant is 1,733 euros per month, from which the grant recipient must pay for compulsory pension and accident insurance.

“The level of artist grants has fallen behind the general wage trend,” says Taike Director Paula Tuovinen. “Artists should be able to earn a living and normal social security from their artistic work.”

Over 600 artists work on artist grants each year, representing approximately three percent of all artists in Finland.

This year, two artist professor grants were awarded. Photographer Ilkka Halso and artist Maija Tammi are entitled to use the title of Artist Professor for the duration of their five-year grant periods.

Fewer grants awarded to artists in Uusimaa this year

Approximately two hundred of the artists who are beginning their grant work at the start of next year live in the Uusimaa region. They represent 70 percent of all grant recipients, compared to 74 percent last year. The share of applicants from Uusimaa has also shown a slight decline over the past two years. This year, 62 percent of applications came from Uusimaa.

Female artists funded mostly in the fields of dance and design, male artists in music

Among all the artists funded by Taike, 57 percent are women – the exact same share as among all applicants. However, there are clear differences between artforms. In the fields of dance, design and multidisciplinary art, at least three-quarters of grant recipients are women, which corresponds to the number of female applicants in these fields. Male artists in turn were awarded more grants in the fields of music, circus art and art journalism. The share of female applicants was lowest in the field of music at just 37 percent.

One in six grant recipients is a young artist

A total of 49 young artists under the age of 35 will be working on a grant in different fields of the arts as of next year. The share of young artists is highest in the fields of architecture and dance and smallest in the fields of literature and design. In the fields of theatre, photographic art, and illustrations and comics, a one in four grant recipients is a young artist.

One in five grant recipients is a visual artist

The most competition for grants was in the fields of the visual arts, photographic art, illustrations and comics, and multidisciplinary art, where just 8–9 percent of applicants were awarded a grant. This is despite the fact that the highest number of grants, 61, was awarded in the field of the visual arts. The least competition was in the field of architecture, where nearly 40 percent of applicants were awarded a grant. Taike awards working grants especially to fund the work of professional visual artists and writers.

Applications reviewed by more than 70 artists, researchers and critics

Altogether Taike received almost 2,600 applications, which is slightly less than in the previous year. The applications were reviewed by a total of 74 peer reviewers in seven arts councils. Peer reviews are provided by visual artists, writers, musicians, actors and other artists, as well as by art teachers, researchers and critics. The overall assessment of applications is also influenced by regional and linguistic factors, as well as gender equality. Taike’s peer reviewers are experts who live in different parts of Finland and are rotated every two years to ensure a diversity of opinions.

Taike determines how the grants are to be distributed between the different artforms, after which the arts councils for each artform select the recipients independently. The awarding of grants is based on the Artist Grants Act (734/1969). The total amount of artist grants is approximately 11.5 million euros per year.
