Central Arts Council appoints new members to arts councils for the next two-year term

The Central Arts Council of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland has appointed 75 art experts for the seven national arts councils for the 2017-18 term. In addition, 112 members have been appointed for the 13 regional arts councils. The chairpersons of all the arts councils have artist backgrounds.

The Central Arts Council selected the members of the arts councils on the basis of proposals submitted by approximately 800 art experts and organisations, including art associations, universities and regional councils.

For the 2017-18 term, the scope of the arts councils is the same as in the current term. The National Council for the Performing Arts will award grants and prizes in the fields of theatre, performance and live art, dance and circus. The National Council for the Visual Arts will award grants and prizes in the fields of visual art, photographic art, and comics and illustrations. The National Council for Audiovisual Art will award grants and prizes in the fields of cinema, media art, and light and sound art.

“Peer reviews for each artform will be ensured by utilising expertise from multiple arts councils. In addition, we plan to call on the expertise of persons who were nominated but not appointed to the arts councils for reviewing applications,” says Risto Ruohonen, Chair of the Central Arts Council.

The Central Arts Council has appointed photographer and artist Marja Helander to chair the National Council for Mobility and Diversity in the Arts. The other members of the council will be appointed at the beginning of 2017 once the other arts councils have been organised. Six of the members will be chairpersons or vice-chairs of other national arts councils, and two will be chairpersons or vice-chairs of regional arts councils. The National Council for Mobility and Diversity in the Arts will award grants in the fields of multidisciplinary art, multiculturalism and international activities.

The Central Arts Council and arts councils are expert bodies of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike). The arts councils decide on the awarding of grants and prizes to artists, artist groups and communities on the basis of peer reviews, each with its own field and region. Each year the arts councils distribute 21.7 million euros in grants and awards, representing 64 percent of overall support for the arts and culture distributed by Taike. In addition, the arts councils evaluate applications for subsidies within Taike’s jurisdiction.
