State grant for art procurements in accordance with the principle “1% of construction costs for art” – application period begins on 2 June
The “1% of construction costs for art” principle is an international model by which art procurements are realised as part of the overall construction project. The principle has been applied in Finland to varying degrees in the years since the Second World War.
The principle may be applied to new buildings, buildings undergoing renovation and infrastructure projects, such as road construction. The art can include paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, light art, media art and installations. The art is planned as part of the total construction project so that it is genuinely integrated with the built environment.
Promoting the “1% of construction costs for art” principle is one of the stated aims of the Government Programme of Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, as well as one of the priorities of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland. The new grant will support around 20 new construction projects realised in accordance with the “1% of construction costs for art” principle throughout Finland.
The Arts Promotion Centre Finland is also promoting the “1% of construction costs for art” principle in the work of regional artists. There are currently nine regional artists working at the regional offices who can assist in the planning and implementation of new “1% of construction costs for art” projects.
“The aim of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland is to increase activities in accordance with the “1% of construction costs for art” principle throughout the country, as well as to strengthen the quality criteria for art in public art procurements. Applying the “1% of construction costs for art” principle will require long-term and systematic work,” says Minna Sirnö, Director of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland.
Applications may be submitted until 15 August 2014.
