Taike decides on distribution of appropriations among different forms of support for 2024
The budget decision taken by Parliament in December defined the allocation of funds according to eight main categories. Taike has now decided on the precise distribution of appropriations among different fields of the arts and forms of support. The total amount of appropriations for Taike is approximately 24.7 million euros. Previously, appropriations for Taike were allocated from lottery funds, whereas now they have been transferred directly to the state budget. These appropriations can be used to pay operating subsidies, special subsidies, project grants and so-called thematic subsidies among different fields of the arts.
The latest decision on appropriations applies only to forms of support that could be applied for in autumn 2023. Accordingly, forms of support such as artist grants, public display grants for the visual arts, library grants and supplementary artist pensions are not subject to cuts in 2024.
“Taike’s decision secures multi-year operating subsidies for arts communities in order to ensure continuity within the arts sector. At the same time, we aim to secure the renewal of the arts sector and the inclusion of new actors,” says Kaisa Rönkkö, Director of Taike.
In addition to multi-year operating subsidies, Taike decided to maintain or even increase the level of some forms of support. These include appropriations for media art, appropriations for literature and art journalism, and appropriations for multidisciplinary art. Among thematic forms of support, Taike’s artist-in-residence subsidies and appropriations for promoting cultural diversity and combating racism will remain at the same level as in 2023.
The funding cuts will affect mainly prizes awarded by Taike, regional grants, appropriations for design, illustrations and comics, and photographic art, and appropriations for cultural magazines and online publications. These cuts are on average around 10 percent.
The biggest individual changes apply to media art, support for which will increase by 10 percent, and design, support for which will decrease by 17 percent.
Taike’s decisions are based on long-term changes in the number of applications and an overall assessment of the need for state support. With its new budget structure, Taike has been better able to assess the balance between different fields of the arts and has tried to strengthen their equal status within funding for the arts as a whole. Especially with regard to project grants, the aim is to achieve a similar proportion of positive decisions in relation to the number of applications within different fields of the arts. Taike reduced appropriations for regional grants as these partially overlap with Taike’s other forms of support.
