State artist grants awarded to 311 artists
A record number of applications was received, approximately 3300, representing an increase of 15 percent over the previous year. The number of applicants within the field of illustrations and comics, as well as circus art, was up by almost a half compared to a year ago. The number of applications increased in all fields of the arts with the exception of architecture, where the number remained the same.
The grant work funded by Taike starts from the beginning of 2022. The duration of the artist grants varies from half a year to five years.
Artist Professor grants awarded to 12 applicants
Twelve five-year Artist Professor grants were awarded to particularly distinguished artists. The amount of these grants is the same as other grants, but recipients are entitled to use the title of Artist Professor during the grant period.
Artist Professor grants were awarded in the fields of cinema, literature, the visual arts, media art, design, music and photographic art.
Grants awarded to less than ten percent of applicants
The success of grant applications varies by artform. Obtaining an artist grant was most difficult in the fields of the visual arts, music and multidisciplinary art. In the field of architecture, one in three applicants were awarded a grant. The highest number of grants was awarded in the field of the visual arts, where 63 artists were awarded grants. Writers and translators were awarded a total of 51 grants.
More than half of all grants awarded to female artists
Female artists accounted for 60 percent of all artist grants that were awarded, while their share among applicants was 58 percent. Female artists received at least half of the grants in all fields of the arts with the exception of media art, where the number of grants awarded to female artists was in the same proportion as their share among applicants. As in previous years, the share of female applicants was lowest in the field of music – just 38 percent – yet here too female artists accounted for more than half of all recipients. In the field of dance, four out of five applicants and recipients were female artists.
Young artists represent one in six grant recipients
Next year, 49 young artists under the age of 35 will begin working on a state artist grant. The share of young artists among grant recipients has remained the same as in previous years at roughly 16-17 percent. The proportion of young artists among grant recipients is highest in the fields of circus art dance and photographic art and lowest in the field of literature, where they represent just 7 percent of applicants.
More than 60 percent of applicants from Uusimaa
Among all grant recipients, over two hundred live in Uusimaa in Southern Finland. Altogether, artists from Uusimaa represent 63 percent of applicants and 71 percent of recipients.
Approximately 70 artists and other experts participate in peer reviews
Applications for state artist grants were reviewed by seven arts councils with a total of 75 members. Artists in different fields of the arts and other experts participated in the peer reviews. Members of the arts councils can serve for a maximum of two consecutive two-year terms.
Taike determines how the grants are distributed between the different artforms, after which the arts councils for each artform select the recipients independently. The awarding of grants is based on the Artist Grants Act (734/1969).
The total amount of artist grants is approximately 12.7 million euros per year. Altogether, almost six hundred artists will be working on an artist grant from the start of next year. The amount of each artist grant is 1981 euros per month, from which the grant recipient must pay for compulsory pension and accident insurance.
Ten grant recipients have not given their consent to have their names published.
