Taike awards 680,000 euros in grants to cultural magazines and online publications
Cultural magazines in Finland maintain a diverse social debate about culture, science, art or different worldviews.
The amount of each grant was determined by both the quality and circulation of the magazine and the necessity of the grant. Cultural magazines and online publications represent a wide range of different contents, and they have readers from all over the world. The range of magazines extends from magazines within specific fields of the arts to general culture, opinion and peace magazines.
“With solutions that may even seem radical, we believe we can strengthen the message of free media and the autonomy of art”, says Kaisa Rönkkö, Director of Taike.
Despite the budget cuts, the amounts awarded to 12 magazines and Kultti ry, the Association for Cultural, Scientific and Advocacy Magazines, were increased. The largest grant, 73,000 euros, was awarded to Voima, a magazine distributed to readers free of charge and published in print nine times a year. Among Swedish-language publications, Taike awarded the largest grant to the versatile cultural magazine Ny Tid, which received a grant of 55,000 euros.
A new grant recipient was Förbundsarena rf, which promotes the availability, visibility and impact of Finnish-Swedish cultural magazines. Among its activities, the association carries out joint marketing and organises continuing education.
Cultural magazines and online publications were awarded a total of 680,000 euros, compared to 800,000 euros a year ago. The reason for the reduction is that Taike had less funds available for cultural grants this year. Appropriations were cut by almost 21 percent from the 2024 level. Since grants for cultural magazines have a special social significance for freedom of expression and democracy, they were cut less, by 15 percent.
