Central Arts Council appoints national arts councils for a two-year term

The Central Arts Council of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland has appointed ten national arts councils and one subcommittee for a two-year term (2013-2014). According to new legislation in Finland, the Central Arts Council makes decisions regarding the number of national arts councils, their names and their roles. It also appoints the chairpersons and other members of the arts councils. If required, the Central Arts Council may also appoint subcommittees.

During the first two-year term there will be ten national arts councils. A chairperson and six to eleven other members were appointed for each arts council. The members are all experts in the fields of the arts and culture.

Each chairperson and other member may be appointed to the arts council for no more than two consecutive terms, after which he or she may be reappointed after no less than two years.

Before appointing the national arts councils, the Central Arts Council heard the recommendations of recognised experts in the fields of the arts and culture. When appointing the members of each national arts council, the Central Arts Council strove to ensure a broad base of expertise in the arts and other fields, as well as a gender balance in accordance with the Act on Equality between Women and Men. Regional and linguistic aspects were also taken into consideration.

The national arts councils are expert bodies of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland. Each national arts council makes decisions within its own area of responsibility regarding the awarding of state artist grants, as well as other grants and awards for artists, artist groups and organisations on the basis of peer reviews. In addition, as expert bodies within their fields, the national arts councils provide expert advice and participate in the strategy work of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland regarding the arts and culture.
