A revised edition of The Handbook of the Percent for Art provides models for carrying out public art projects in Finland
The Handbook, published online, consists of two parts. The Handbook of the Percent for Art Principle for the Commissioner explains the most common art funding and commissioning models in Finland. The publication provides practical advice for anyone interested in incorporating art in the built environment.
The Handbook of the Percent for Art Principle for the Artist is a practical guide for visual artists and designers who want to make public art. The handbook explains the whole process, step by step, from incorporating art to construction, drawing up a contract for an art project to working on a construction site and, finally, to maintaining a work of art throughout its life cycle.
The Artists’ Association of Finland published a revised edition of the handbook in cooperation with the Arts Promotion Centre Finland in November 2019. The revised handbook has been amended and updated to cover the latest phenomena in public art in Finland. There are new chapters on issues such as public art in hospital projects and the principles of public art covering whole municipalities and cities that are becoming common. First published in 2015, the handbook was the Percent for Art project’s final report.
The Handbook of the Percent for Art Principle has proven to be a seminal work for public art, used by artists, art commissioners, developers, as well as other parties involved in public art.
The popularity of public art has continued to grow since the publication of the first edition of the handbook in 2015. In recent years, cities and municipalities have readily developed new operating models that combine art and construction, and the ways in which art has been commissioned and funded, as well as concepts in the field, have evolved and become more professional and diversified.
