Taike receives 1139 applications from communities

Calls for applications for communities closed at the end of October and beginning of November. Eight forms of support were available, and a total of 1139 applications were submitted to the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike). The number is around a hundred fewer than a year ago, primarily due to changes made to the forms of support.

Funding decisions will be made in three stages. Decisions for project grants for “Percent for Art” projects will be made by the end of 2024, decisions for operational subsidies for specific artforms will be made by 31 January 2025, and decisions for other government grants for communities will be made by 17 March 2025.

The highest number of applications were received for operational subsidies for specific artforms. Taike awards operational subsidies within all fields of the arts, and a total of 357 applications are currently being processed. In the previous round, a total of 196 operational subsidies were awarded for 2024, amounting to 13.5 million euros in total.

The biggest changes concern special subsidies for communities and general grants for festivals. For 2025, the nature of special subsidies has been changed to development subsidies, and these will be awarded to a significantly smaller number of applicants than before. Altogether 126 applications for special subsidies were received, and according to the preliminary policy, approximately 10 applicants may receive a positive decision.

A total of 203 applications were received for general grants for festivals. The Ministry of Education and Culture has centralised the funding of all national festivals to Taike, with the exception of film festivals, and this will increase both the number of applications and appropriations for festivals.

The other forms of support that were available were project grants for children’s and youth culture, general grants for cultural magazines and online publications, subsidies for promoting cultural diversity and combating racism, subsidies for promoting inclusion and cultural wellbeing, and project grants for “Percent for Art” projects.

In total, funding for discretionary grants and subsidies awarded by Taike have been cut by approximately 5 million euros. The distribution of these cuts among the different forms of support will be decided as part of the processing of applications. Taike will next update on the status of appropriations in December.
