Engaging with the arts can be beneficial for both mental and physical health. This is a key conclusion of a new report from the WHO Regional Office for Europe analysing the evidence from over 900 global publications – the most comprehensive review of evidence on arts and health to date.

The Central Arts Council began its new term on Thursday 31 October. Convened under Chair Juha Itkonen, the council appointed Executive Director Rosa Meriläinen as its Deputy Chair.

The theme of this year’s Arts and Culture Barometer is the livelihood of artists. Data for the barometer is gathered by means of an online survey that is open to artists working in all fields of the arts.

Minister of Science and Culture Hanna Kosonen has appointed the Central Arts Council for the term 1 September 2019 to 31 August 2022. Author Juha Itkonen was appointed as Chair of the Council.

Ethnomusicologist Esa Vienamo (MA) has been appointed regional artist for outsider art. The role of the regional artist for outsider art is to promote the artistic work opportunities of outsider artists, reinforce the structures for these activities, and engage marginalised artists.

The Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) has appointed Jaakko Kemppainen MA (New Media and Game Design, Aalto University), MSc (Digital Culture, University of Jyväskylä) regional artist for games as art. As regional artist for games as art, Kemppainen is responsible for promoting the status of games as art, as well as for stimulating interest and promoting opportunities in this field.

The Central Arts Council of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) has appointed 74 art experts for the seven national arts councils for the 2019-20 term. In addition, 107 members have been appointed for the 13 regional arts councils.

Barometer to shed light on the mobility of art and artists and related needs.

Changes have been made to this autumn’s calls for applications. For the first time, the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) will award three-year operational subsidies for the performing arts. The application period for special subsidies for children’s culture has been moved from spring to autumn. Take has also made changes to how some artforms are categorised.
