Cuts in discretionary government grants to be negotiated at budget session in September

The Ministry of Finance has today published its draft budget for 2025. The proposal includes cuts to discretionary government grants for the arts and culture. It appears that there will be no cuts to artist grants or artist pensions.

The Government will discuss the draft budget at its budget session on 3-4. September The budget proposal will then be submitted on 23 September to Parliament, which will approve the State Budget in December.

The main category for the Ministry of Education and Culture includes a total of EUR 65 million euros in cuts to discretionary government grants for 2025. The ministry's budget proposal includes EUR 15 million in cuts to discretionary government grants. The remaining EUR 50 million will be decided during the Government's budget session at the beginning of September.

As an expert agency, Taike will strive to influence the targeting of cuts in such a way that their impact on the arts and culture is as minimal as possible. In early autumn, as the preparations progress, Taike will also engage in discussions with those stakeholders who may be significantly targeted by the cuts.

“In the Government’s challenging financial situation, Taike will strive to secure the operating conditions of the arts and culture sector as well as possible and to look to the future beyond 2025. The scale of the adjustments may mean changes to Taike's forms of support,” says Kaisa Rönkkö, Director of Taike.
